Vintage Indigo Shop Banner with Elegant Calligraphy

This is an antique Shop Banner (Nobori), believed to have belonged to "Mizunoen," a traditional Japanese tea house. The deep indigo-dyed cotton provides a dramatic backdrop for the bold, masterfully written white Kanji (Chinese characters), capturing the essence of Japanese historical aesthetics.

Design and Historical Value: The top of the banner features the trademark symbol (Mon) of the shop, a clear symbol of its identity and established status. Beneath it, the characters "美津乃園" are rendered in elegant Tappitsu (skilled calligraphy).

Display and Utility: The textile has a stiff core inserted at the top, making it easy to hang and display without sagging. Its vertical format and serene blue-and-white colors are ideal for a Chashitsu (tea room) or any Japanese-style interior, serving as a beautiful substitute for a traditional Kakejiku (hanging scroll).

Pre-Purchase Note: Caution Regarding Indigo Transfer

This banner appears to be unwashed, preserving the most vivid contrast between the white characters and the deep indigo. Because it is unwashed, the indigo dye may rub off (transfer) onto your hands if handled roughly. To maintain the striking beauty of the original color and prevent fading or bleeding, we strongly recommend displaying it as is and avoiding washing.
