Antique Japanese Tsutsugaki Indigo Furoshiki (100+ Yrs) - Massive Marriage Knot Motif for Love & Luck - Bold Folk Art Textile

Monumental Antique Tsutsugaki Furoshiki (Over 100 Years Old)

Presenting a spectacular piece of Japanese folk art (Mingei): a massive antique Furoshiki (wrapping cloth), dating back over 100 years. This textile is defined by its deep, resonant indigo blue and the striking technique of Tsutsugaki (freehand paste-resist dyeing). Visible patching and repairs attest to the fact that this valuable cloth was carefully cherished and continuously used across generations.

What is Tsutsugaki? (Freehand Paste Resist) Tsutsugaki is a highly skilled traditional method where a thick rice-paste resist is applied freehand from a cone (like a pastry bag) directly onto the cotton fabric. After drying, the entire cloth is submerged in an indigo vat. When the paste is washed away, the reserved areas of cotton remain stark white, creating bold, dynamic designs that showcase the artist's unique skill.

Auspicious "Marriage Knot" Motif (Enmusubi): The powerful, dynamic design is highly auspicious. Dominating the center is a large, central knot motif, which symbolizes Enmusubi (tying the knot/fateful connection), representing love, marriage, and strong bonds. This textile was intended to bring great luck to its users.

Charming Japanese Traditional Motifs: The cloth is filled with other charming, uniquely Japanese motifs, including:

  • Kai-awase (Shell Matching): Symbolizing marriage and unity.

  • Emakimono (Picture Scrolls): Representing wisdom and storytelling.

  • Uchide no Kozuchi (Magic Mallet): Symbolizing wish fulfillment and good fortune.

Condition & Wabi-Sabi Aesthetics: The fabric exhibits the characteristic beauty of well-worn antique cotton. The damage, far from being a flaw, contributes significantly to its authentic Wabi-Sabi aesthetic. There are notable holes and damage that add to the cloth's unique atmosphere and history. Please carefully examine the provided photos, paying attention to the main areas of damage located in the upper-left, lower-left, and lower-right corners.
