This beautiful calico textile is called Wasarasa(Japanese calico).
Production of Japanese sarasa (calico) began in the Edo period when skillful Japanese dye workers found a method to inspire the designs of Indian calicos.
Sarasa is a plain-weave cloth dyed with various patterns, and has been made in a wide range of Asian countries, including Java, India, and Persia, since ancient times.
The main designs are an arabesque pattern with a continuous pattern of flowers and grasses, and a medallion pattern with a kaleidoscope of paisley motifs resembling tree leaves.
The charm of chintz lies in its life-like patterns that capture lifestyles and natural scenery, and in the depth of the patterns that can be enjoyed through the layering of many colored patterns.
